Using cheap, simple, locally available components, Solar Bottle Bulbs enable people living off the grid to see and read indoors during daylight hours, more safely and sustainably than ever before. Inspired by the Liter of Light project, GamLight aims to install bottle bulbs in schools across The Gambia to help increase literacy.

Safe.

Unlike kerosene and electrically powered lights, Solar Bottle Bulbs are safe for the whole family.

Clean.

No smoke, no fire, no batteries. Using Solar Bottle Bulbs can remove plastic bottles from the waste stream. And since they use only sunlight, there's no future carbon imprint.

Cheap.

Purchasing every component of construction new from a retail store, a single Solar Bottle Bulb costs under 50 Dalasis (US$2). And reclaiming a plastic bottle from the waste stream reduces that by more than half.

Local.

Solar Bottle Bulbs are constructed of simple, locally available components: plastic bottles, water, bleach ("eau de javel"), corrugated sheeting, and glue.

Light.

Each Solar Bottle Bulb, in direct sunlight, can be as bright as a 55W incandescent bulb—which can help students read, and everyone to perform tasks indoors.
